Is It Anxiety Or Am I Just Overwhelmed?

Many people struggle to tell the difference between anxiety and overwhelm.

Both experiences can involve racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, emotional sensitivity, and feeling mentally exhausted. But understanding what’s happening internally can make it easier to respond effectively.

Anxiety

Anxiety often involves anticipation of future problems or threats. The mind becomes focused on “what if” scenarios, trying to prepare for potential outcomes.

This can lead to:

  • overthinking

  • restlessness

  • difficulty relaxing

  • disrupted sleep

Overwhelm

Overwhelm is usually related to cognitive and emotional overload. When too many demands accumulate, the nervous system begins to struggle to process them.

This can look like:

  • shutting down

  • procrastination

  • irritability

  • mental fatigue

When They Combine

Many people experience both anxiety and overwhelm simultaneously. Stress increases anxiety, and anxiety increases the sense of being overwhelmed.

Finding Balance

Therapy can help identify what contributes to these patterns and develop strategies that support emotional regulation, boundaries, and nervous system recovery.

I offer Telehealth psychology sessions across Australia, supporting adults, parents, and neurodivergent clients experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, and life transitions.
